Bead Insertion in Knitting

Beads and sequins can be used to embellish knitwear. They can be sewn on afterwards or knitted in. For the festive hand warmers, ninety beads were inserted into each cuff. Read more .... for illustrated stepwise instructions on knitting beads into a garment.



Supplies

  1. Beading or small diameter sewing needle.
  2. Waste thread to transfer beads to knitting yarn.
  3. Knitting needles.
  4. Fashion yarn.
  5. Beads.

  1. Pick up beads with a sewing or beading needle.
  2. Load beads on the yarn, using waste thread. The waste thread is looped around the yarn and the beads slide over this loop and onto the yarn.
  3. Slide beads down the yarn, where they are parked until needed. Most of the beads are parked about 3 feet away from the knitting. All beads must be loaded in advance; adding a few extra provides insurance in case of a miscount.
  4. Purl a stitch before the bead. On the left hand side you see a few beads waiting to be inserted in the current row. The remaining beads are still parked further down the yarn.
  5. Slip bead into position, after the first purl stitch, before the second purl stitch.
  6. Position of bead for start of 2nd purl stitch.
  7. Form the second purl stitch (shown in process). The bead is now locked into position between two purl stitches.
  8. The second purl stitch is completed and transferred to the right hand needle.
