This photo illustrates 2 quality control tips in the creation of the short rows toe:
1. The use of a marker to separate the YO (or resting stitch) from the stitches to the left, and
2. Extra crochet chains (blue) to designate the start of the provisional chain as well as to provide ease to pickup the last provisional loop. Having a couple of extra chains also means that the chain count can be off in length by a couple of stitches, yet suffice for creating loops. The loops are picked up, beginning at the opposite end, where the chain stitch can be easily "unzipped" as provisional stitches are placed on a needle.
The red, 1.75 mm dpn serves only to highlight a stitch (green) still to be picked up from the provisional cast on (blue chain).
