I ended up using the basic cast off for the 2x2 rib cuff on the toe up sock because I needed a loose cast off for stretch. I also tried the Kitchener cast off (looked nice) and the crochet cast off (looked like the basic cast off) and decided simple was better and it suited the sock design.
Instructions:
- Knit the first and second stitches normally. These are the K2 of the K2P2 rib stitch.
- Pass the first stitch (furthest away from the needle tip) on the right hand needle over the stitch closest to the needle tip. This leaves one stitch on the needle.
- Purl the next stitch. There are again 2 stitches on the right hand needle. Pass the first stitch on the right hand needle over this new stitch to again leave one stitch on the right hand needle.
- Repeat step 2.
- Continue the pattern of knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitches and passing the furthest stitch over the closest stitch, until all stitches on both circular needles have been worked. Bind off loosely to maintain good stretch for the sock.
- Draw the yarn through the last remaining stitch. Try the sock on before cutting the yarn.
- Try the sock on. If the tension is correct the sock will not bind, and the stretch of the cast off row will match the cuff. If it is too tight, undo the cast off and redo it a bit looser. Cut the yarn and weave it in when you are finished.
