M1 Increase

Unlike the yarn over increases used for laces, the make one (M1) stitch is used when you do not want to leave a hole in the work. It is used in the swing coat and is used for the toe increases in the rectangular toe. The loop is then knitted through the back of the stitch to twist it and prevent a hole. For photos and additional detail ... Read more...

STEPS

  1. In image 1 the right hand needle is poised above the horizontal bar between the stitch just completed and the next stitch.
  2. Pick up the horizontal bar with the right hand needle.
  3. Place the bar (now a loop) on the left hand needle so that the leading edge of the loop is on the front side of the left hand needle. You may prefer to PU the bar directly with the left hand needle.
  4. Knit through the back of the loop. This twists the stitch to prevent a hole from appearing. Images 4a, 4b, and 4c show sequences of this step.
  5. The last image shows the completed stitch.
