It can get cold in Michigan and my husband needed a new winter hat for clearing snow and walks. The one his mother had knitted was worn and torn from over a decade of harsh winter service.
The hats we found at our local outdoor store were too small and too thin, so I knitted a multi-layer hat that my husband named his "single digit hat"--a hat for temperatures below 10 oF.
Design Features: This tube-based hat has a dark green exterior (Aran Pack wool) and interior mosaic style pattern of dark green and tan, covering the head with a minimum of 2 layers of wool. The tan colored yarn is Patons' Classic Merino. A brim, created by folding a portion of the inside out provides 4 layers of warmth over the ears. Additional insulation is created from the stranding of the two colors of yarn. The photo above is knitted with a pattern from : McCall's Needlework & Crafts, Fall/Winter 1976-77, p. 60 & 144.
Man's HatThe "single digit hat" that I made for my husband uses the same colors and mosaic pattern, however it takes its styling cue from cossack fur hats to give it a masculine look, and the size is adjusted for a man. The hat in the photo has been worn for 2 winters.

Single Digit Hat
This is a wonderful idea - hubbies need to be warm. How about a picture showing the hat in use?
