SSK

SSK 1 Two types of decreases are used in the sock construction, the K2tog and the SSK. The K2tog is a rightward slanted decrease and the SSK is a leftward slanted decrease. These are used in the gusset construction and the toe construction. The turning heel uses a combination of SSK and P2tog decreases. The six following photos show the formation of the SSK decrease.

Steps

  1. Slip the first stitch of the decrease knitwise from the left to the right needle. This is done by inserting the right needle through the stitch from front to back, as if to knit.
  2. The stitch is drawn off the left needle without yarning over. You can see the yarn is behind, not through, the stitch in the second photo.
  3. Likewise, slip the second stitch knitwise from the left to the right needle.
  4. The 4th photo shows both slipped stitches resting on the right hand needle.
  5. The left needle is passed through these 2 stitches in the direction left to right, so that both needles pass through the stitches.
  6. Yarn over with the right hand needle and draw the yarn through both stitches. Two stitches have been reduced to one.
