To help manage the yarn tails associated with horizontal stripes and color changes I tie a small, temporary square knot. This quick measure prevents gaps from occurring in the knitting and allows me to continue knitting past the color changes until I'm ready to weave in the yarn tails. The first one (on the left hand side) is the change from white to green and the temporary knot is indicated by the left most arrow. The next one over is the green/yellow transition which I did not point to, followed by yellow/pink and then pink /white.
When I'm ready to weave in the yarn tails, I undo a knot and then weave in each yarn tail. To eliminate or minimize the appearance of a jog at the color change, I create a duplicate stitch if necessary.
