Picking Up Gusset Stitches (through back loops)

Stepwise Instructions

  1. Start with a chain stitch edge. (Image above.)
  2. Insert the crochet hook through the back loop.
  3. Draw the yarn through the loop.
  4. Stitch completed.
  5. Six stitches picked up.

Usually I pick up about 10 sts and then slide them off the back end of the crochet hook onto the knitting needle. I prefer to use a crochet needle because I find it faster as well as more convenient for adjusting the number of stitches picked up. If it looks like I picked up one too many, then I drop an appropriate loop when transfering the stitches to the knitting needle. If I need to add a stitch, I transfer until that point, drop the rest and pick up again, inserting an extra stitch.
