The basic heel and the ridgeline heel each used a different style for picking up the gusset stitches. In the basic heel, two loops were picked up from the chain stitch selvedge as illustrated at right. In the ridgeline heel, just the backs of the loops were picked up. Stepwise Instructions
Usually I pick up about 10 sts and then slide them off the back end of the crochet hook onto the knitting needle. I prefer to use a crochet needle because I find it faster as well as more convenient for adjusting the number of stitches picked up. If it looks like I picked up one too many, then I drop an appropriate loop when transfering the stitches to the knitting needle. If I need to add a stitch, I transfer until that point, drop the rest and pick up again, inserting an extra stitch.
