Well it looks as if Shaq's nemesis, the chipmunk, ate most of my tulip bulbs over this past winter. Only one came up and bloomed today, although it is very beautiful to look at. Fortunately there are probably a thousand daffodils of about eight varieties in my yard, which I started planting over 10 years ago when I discovered how popular a food tulips were. I learned very early that I had to put fencing over the tulip bulbs to discourage critters from eating them. Unfortunately the chipmunk, who showed up last year, can dig under the fence or move between the holes, since he is so small. The upside is that this has been a bumper year for daffodil and they have had many years to multiply. The cool, moist weather has kept them in bloom for over six weeks so far--the best year to date. Deer, dogs, rabbits and other animals do not like eating daffodil bulbs, unlike those of the tulip.
