First of seven images showing the replacement of the heel flap and turning heel with a knitted patch.
Images in this Series
- A new heel flap (4 sts narrower, 2 each side) and heel flap have been knitted and are blocked.
- The old heel is cut through the center to the thin spot, but not removed. The two sides are then overlapped and whipped stitch, creating a reinforcement layer that will lay beneath the new patch.
- The sides of the patch are sewn with invisible seams (mattress stitch) to the existing sock, stopping 1/2" from the end of the heel flap.
- The midpoint of the kitchener is indicated with a stitch marker on the new patch (live stitches) and the existing sole. On the existing sole, the loops are picked up on two small diameter dpns.
- Close up showing the existing stitches picked up on dpns. Please note that this image is upside down compared to image 4.
- Image six shows the sock after half the kitchener stitches have been completed.
- The kitchener stitches have been completed. The last step is to complete the last 1/2" of mattress stitches on either side of the turning heel and to weave the yarn ends in.
