- Before. Two pieces, reverse stockinette with purl side facing (or 2 garter stitch fabrics) in position to begin grafting.
- The yarn has been anchored and the needle is brought up through the first loop of the bottom fabric.
- The yarn has been pulled up through the first loop of the bottom piece.
- Same as #3, but with a dark background for contrast and visibility.
- The needle is brought up through the first loop of the top piece and down through the second loop of the top piece.
- The yarn has been pulled through the first two upper stitches and you can see the horizontal bar of the purl stitch taking shape.
- The needle is now brought down through the first loop of the bottom piece and up through the second loop. It is actually the second stitch, however in this process you are always working with 2 loops, so I call them first and second loops.
- This image shows that you can sometimes pass the needle through 3 loops at a time with certain yarn / gauge combinations, as with this worsted weight cotton.
- Most of the stitches have been completed.
- All the stitches have been completed. The final step is weaving in the yarn tail.
